Flipping the Switch from Reactive to Proactive

In school communications, it’s easy to feel like every week brings another urgent issue to manage — a viral rumor, a board controversy, a facilities mishap, or an unexpected safety concern. But the school districts that truly stand out are the ones that don’t just communicate during a crisis. They communicate long before one ever happens. They flipped the switch from  reactive to proactive communications.  Because when you build the kind of everyday trust, a crisis is easier to manage when it does arise.

More districts are recognizing the importance of proactive storytelling and authentic engagement with their communities. Instead of letting crises define their public image, communicators are shaping the narrative year-round — celebrating student achievement, highlighting staff innovation, and showing taxpayers what success looks like in their schools.  We say this often: if you don’t promote the good stuff, you’ll only get attention from the media for the bad. Conversely, if you get ten positive news plugs this year, suddenly that one negative blow doesn’t carry nearly the weight.
